Dan Howitt Shares his Homework
Dan is in the process of obtaining his level one triathlon coaching qualification. As part of his assessment he had to design a 12 week program for club triathletes. They could choose any distance, so of course he decided to do Ironman. Dan has graciously decided to share his homework to have a look at or use as a guide if you wish. This program was designed for his Dad - Ironman legend Rob Howitt.
The method used for Heart Rate (HR) was based on a threshold heart rate of 180bpm less your age, then adding up to 10 beats depending on your perceived level of fitness.
* 10 beats - very fit
* 5 beats - in the process of becoming very fit
* 1 beat - thought summer was the off season
As an example a very fit 40 year old would calculate maximum aerobic threshold as follows: 180 - 40 + 10 = 150bpm which is the maximum aerobic THRESHOLD!!!
Sessions in the program have been designed using a maximum aerobic threshold of 130 - you should substitute your own number as appropriate.
Click on the attachment below to download the program in excel and happy viewing and training! If you've got questions or comments Dan would love to hear from you-
Many thanks to Daniel Howitt (1x Ironman Finisher) for sharing his training program.
