First Olympic Distance Tri

I have to post this to get Scott to pump me up so here we go.

Did my first Olympic Distance Triathlon last Saturday 8/19. I also had a bunch of second grade girls over for a birthday party half an hour after I got home, so my day was packed and I did not wait/eat/stretch after the race. Pack and leave. But that is not what you want to read about.

Okay total time 2:54 minutes and here is the break down.

Swim and first transition 39 minutes (1500meters) I was slow, but I made it through. Finished with people from the next wave 6-9 minutes behind me, but I was not last in my wave! Only two of us without a wet suit in the first wave.

Bike was 80 minutes (40K). Wet rain/mist most of the time, roads were good, not many turns, just slow down. About 3 miles in the dude in front of me hit a dog. I stopped, he said he never saw it, but I did. Wondered when he was going to dodge it. I do not know how bad he was messed up, but it was bad. Dog was about 70lbs. Other than that, very hilly. Some of the hills were by the snow ski hills. I was ready to get off the bike by the end.

Run was about 52 minutes (10k) Changed socks, since mine were soked! Ran around the lake and it was a good run. Nobody passed me and I was still seeing bikes come in for 4 miles, so I was happy. Compeditive attitude kicked in once I saw more and more people ahead of me and I had to pass them. Passed most of them and there is a good boost from that.

I was mostly happy. End of the bike was slow, but noticed on Sunday that my rear bike tire was flat, so that might have had a little to do with it. Wonder when that happened? Pumped it up on Monday after patching the one hole I found and it was down again in the afternoon. Maybe there was more than one hole.

Plan was for 2:40 time, but the hills were huge and my swim was bad. I think when I saw the distance it messed me up mentally, but felt it was a good swim.

Now I have three Sprints and one Oly, so next year my goal is half IM!

Jason! Way to go! Don't beat yourself up on a first Oly race! You did it and are wanting more, so that says something in itself!

Your run was great, and it sounds like you finished strong. That's a plus. Also, this gives you a gage for distance. Which half IM are planning on next year? Muncie? Muncie's a pretty good swim, basically flat bike and hilly run. But, it's a good course.

If I were you, I'd be proud of the time you put up. You know what you smoked and you know what to improve. Congrats!

Heather

Killer job dude! That's an impressive 1st Oly. 52 is 8:40s~; impressed again. You must be a pain junkie to swim without a w.s in w.s. legal race. Great swim. Bike was cookin despite the wet roads and adverse conditions. How was T1 & T2?

T1 and T2 were slow and wet. Changed my plan of running bare foot until I was able to mount my bike, then socked and jumped on. Also changing the socks in T2 was more time, but had to be done. They did not have chip timing, so all the times were watch readings.

Oh and just to make me feel better 52 minutes for a 10k is 8:22mm.

Heather, yes I have been thinking about Muncie for the half IM next year. I know others that do it, so it is time to start planning. I want to do a marathon too next spring.

Now it is time to relax for a month, just run and bike to work. Not run to work, but run in the morning and then on the pony to ride to work.

Way to go Jason, you found out just how much farther the Olys are but you did great! As for the Half IM, bite the bullet and sign up, it was the best and hardest thing I did this summer.
Again, great job.
Spike.

Yes I will sign up early and remember that is my main goal of my training. I am pumped now to do one. I have two in mind: One is Heather's suggestion of Munce and the other is the Stealhead in Michigan (part of the ironman.com half IM tour). I am very pumped.
