1st tri of the season

Ok, guys....again Where is Everybody?!

Had my first tri of the season yesterday and PR'd the course. I ended up having my best swim, best ride (avg 21.7 mph) and average run (9:15 mm). It was a hily course and a long gradual hill coming out of the transistion. My run got hurt on that hill; as I got to the top, my sides started getting stitches and I felt like I couldn't get a full breath. That subsided at about a mile and a half and I picked up the pace.

I finished 8th in my age group and 155th out of 450, so I was pretty happy with how I've progressed. I beat last year's time on the same course by 12 minutes.

22 mph! You rock chick! USCF says that puts you in the top 1% of cyclists nationally. On a hilly course even! How's that make you feel?!

You're sounding like an Iron Mom to me!

Good job

Heater, great job this weekend.

I will report in on my Sprint at Warsaw:

I also finished very good 161/550 and 1:18:10 (last year I did a 1:28:40), so I am very happy. My run was good 23:18 for 3 miles, my bike was okay 42:00 (13.5 miles) or 19.3mpg average. My swim was what needs to improve 10 minutes for a 400m.

Not MPG

My bike speed should be mph and not mpg. My brain must not be working right yet. Felt good enough for a run this morning though.

My run was a disappointment, but like I've said earlier, I'm training to pace myself. By the way, my ab muscles still hurt from the side stitches this weekend...I wonder what that's all about.

Jweir~ Great race! How was the weather up there? Here in Indy, it was perfect! I'm jealous of your run time!

And thanks for the support guys! There are times when I start to question this quest for IM, but you lift me up off my butt and keep me going!

Scott~ I worked out the budget today so that I can hopefully do St. Croix next May. So, as of now, its in the works!

COOL IM! I hope you can bring your family! Don't make any resies without chatting with me first. Hopefully I can save you $ or at at least give you direction on where to stay etc. You'll love St Croix and the speed bump we call "The Beast".

FYI... I heard this theory on side stitches... Stitches are believed to be caused by rhythmic breathing coinciding with your foot strike. This action causes you to stretch the tendons & muscles attached to your diaphragm. I used to get stitches regularly. The article suggested concentrating on breathing technique and not timing breaths with foot strikes. I must say, I rarely get one now. Fact or placebo effect? You decide.

I do know the following relief technique fixes me quickly when I do get a stitch.
1) Slow down
2) Inhale deeply
3) Exhale deeply from the diaphragm through pursed lips (like blowing up a balloon)
This has always cured me within 30 seconds or so.

Good luck. Hope this helps! See you in May :)

Scott's right as usual, (your the best dude) a slow exhale through pursed lips will break the cycle of wrong breathing and it will relax your brain too, in martial arts we use this technique to center ourselfs for what we are about to do, it works for racing, training, doing the bills ect. ect. Another thing that has worked for me is a slow out count on three strides, inhale on one or two strides then exhale on three strides again.
Way to go with your bike speed, I would love to join you in St. Croix next year and we could do the beast with Scott, maybe I'll win the lottery and join you. If I'm not there in person I will be there in spirit.
Best of luck to all this season.
Spike.

Also with the deep breaths, make sure you are pushing out our abs when this happens, see how far you can push you belly button out. When you exhale, picture you belly button touching your spine.

Spike... If you're interested in coming down, I'll do my best to make it affordable for you. It's worth the trip :)

I'll try the rhythmic breathing, I've tried it before. I'll also try the pursed lips.

Spike~ We'd love to see you in May in the VI!

Thanks guys that means alot to me, however my middle daughter has her wedding in early June next year and as the father of the bride my mastercard is smoking right now, and will continue to until sometime late next year, but I'm in the tri life for the long haul and 08 might be an option to come down and have a great time on your island. Like I said before, I'm in for the long haul and there is time to maybe go up an age group then come down and tangle with the beast :) just to give the hill a fighting chance (can you hear the false bravado?)
Talk to you all soon.
Spike.

Priorities, priorities... Have them muve the wedding up to the first Saturday in May, get married in the VI & honeymoon here. Problem solved :)

Solution #2: Set your future son-in-law up so she cancels the wedding :)
