Bike training in the city

As I grow in my triathlon training, I am finding that experience is making me almost a little too weary of my environment. Specifically, and among other things, training on my bike in Los Angeles.

My question is, if I'm following a training schedule and it calls for a bike workout 3 times a week, with the exception of the Saturday long ride, how do I get in my interval training and my "90-rpm ride on a flat surface," etc. when I live in the middle of nasty LA traffic?

There are bike paths in the area and whatnot, but those get so boring and monotonous for me.

Is a trainer my only option? or are there other options for me to consider when trying to keep my bike training consistent?
