Weight training

As a 40 something just getting back into triathlon I was wondering if any other 40+ people have had success integrating weight training into their training schedule?

I've read a number of articles that say as we get above 30 we start to lose muscle mass relatively quickly and that weight training is essential to maintain athletic perfomance as we age.

Anyone have any ideas, comments or suggestions?

Cheers,

NealeinMI

Well I'm only 24 so I can't comment on personal experience. However I do have a fitness minor and I can tell you that you're right about the relatively fast rate of atrophy after 30 years. If you're starting back after being out of the weight room for a while, start slow - I'm sure that's no surprise. For upper body you may just want to start with your basic pushup just to get started. If that's too stressful on the joints I suggest your standard run of the mill biangular weight machine at the gym.

I am most certainly in your age group and I can recommend weight training, but I would recommend a Personal Trainer to set you on the way becuase you will need to have an assessment of your body so that any weak points can be identified and managed. Also because form when weight training, as in all other sports is absolutley vital. I started out on a simple circuit that focused on all areas of my body (balanced training is important) and then went to free weights to address the various weaknesses I had. A year later I can bench press 120 kgs and and leg press 200 kgs. Weight lifting has ensured that I have remained uninjured in a year of training for ironman distance tri's, and I believe it is fabulous for all women and especially women who are 40+. I encourage you to add a 40 minute session of weight training into your program 3 times a week to reap the benefits, good luck!
