If the race or the promoters are worth anything, they will have facilitys brought in for the event or place the race around already existing plumbing, and by all means use them instead of the surrounding landscape.

If I have to go after the swim or, after the bike, do I take the time to relieve myself?

First rule. PRE-HYDRATE before the race. Starting from two days before the race, sip sports drink and water all day. Two benefits 1) hydration and 2) carbo loading. When you urinate it should be clear or VERY pale yellow. This is your sign you're hydrated sufficiently. Don't over hydrate (I find this very hard but it is possible). You should be making bathroom stops about every 2 hours and have heavy volume.

Now... during the event you won't have too go. Trust me! The anxiety will drive everything from your bladder pre-race. You'll pee once a minute every minute for about 30 minutes from the start of the event. Let it flow! Before the swim, just walk in the water or go on yourself. It's natural and not cared about or even noticed by veterans. Don't try to catch up your hydration during the event. It won't work and if you drink too much at once, you will have to stop. There should be facilities at the venue but I've done races where there were none on the course. I can't address the female needs but she claims she can just go on herself. I can't. I must stop. Porta-potty, tree, bush etc. "If you're a male, the world is your toilet. - (as quoted by my wife). I hope I addressed this sufficiently for you. The response would change if the race were a Half Iron or Iron event.

I can't help but add some irreverence (if not pure honesty) here, but racing in a Canadian climate, sometimes peeing in your wetsuit is the only good thing about a pre-race warm-up swim. It's nasty when the cold water seeps past the zipper and hits your kidneys, but take heart, you can fight back and relieve your bladder at the same time!!!

Pee on yorself. It won't kill you, you can wash it off with a squirt of water. Think about it, do you really want to stop, especially during the bike leg?
