base training

I keep hearing about building a base and then up to another level and
another etc.

I have always just gone out and ran 5k, not even well but I ran it usually
in the 25-30min range...see I said it wasn't good.

I am wondering in 3 disciplines how do I go about building a base that I can
proceed into a olympic to 1/2 iron distance next year.

All thoughts are appreciated as long as they have nothing to do with
christina's butt or bin laden hanging himself I am pretty tired of those.

Re: base training

Brian,
I just did my first tri in May. I started out as a runner as well so it was
an adjustment having to train in all three sports. I followed the 12-week
program on the Triathlete Magazine website
[Only registered and activated users can see links. ] which gave me a good
idea of what I needed to do to get ready. The only thing I would change
about it was the second to last week. Seven and a half hours was a little
much for my body.

I think my biggest challenge was getting ready for the swim portion. I took
several classes, but ended up taking a specialized class offered by two pro
triathletes that really got my confidence up.
Hope you have as much fun as I did getting ready for your first one.
Carlton.

Re: base training

Trinewbies.com has a lot of great programs that show you how to establish a
good base. You can do a sprint with minimal training but when you step up
to 1/2 IM you need a lot more base training.
Good Luck

Re: base training

I think of base training as being the ability to comfortably run/ride/swim a
given distance. This is the fitness level you get to at which time
depending on your goals/races build upon for your season. If your goal is
to finish then your base doesn't need to be at the same level as someone who
wants to win the race. Typically, your base is built up over the
fall/spring in preparation for the racing season.

As others have suggested - you will find lots of information on this topic
on the internet.
