First Ironman suggestions

I was hoping that someone could recommend a awesome first Ironman.
I've heard people say a lot of good things about Lake Placid. Any
other suggestions for a stateside Ironman? I'm looking for something
that will be fitting of the occasion. Obviously I'm just looking to
complete and nothing more. Strictly personal accomplishment.
Hopefully a flat course.

Re: First Ironman suggestions

I only have personal experience at the Half IM distance, but if it's a flat
course you're looking for there can't be many flatter than Pineman.

If you're set on an "official" Ironman race and not just Ironman
distance, everyone says IM Florida is the ticket. Of course, many here
will tell you that 112 miles of flat biking = no rest and a lot more
work than you think. At least on a hilly course you get to use different
muscle groups and you get to coast a little.

Why?

I chose IM Canada for my first IM because of the challenge and the
reported beauty of the course. I wasn't disappointed.

What memory do you want of the bike course? Scenic views and inspiring
climbs, or a head down, grind-it-out over endless boring flats?

If you want a memorable ride, do IMC, Lake Placid, or the Great
Floridian (not to be confused with IM Fla.) There are others, too, but
I can only speak personally of those three courses.

Re: First Ironman suggestions

WRT IM Can, I believe registration opens the day after the race. People in
person can register two people, so if you know someone up there, they can
register for you.

Also, there are some long distance races that are qualifers for IMC, and
IMLP. Check out [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

There is also a lottery for IMC.

Best of luck

Jim

Wow, I thought all of the M-dot races were selling out within a week.
I'm surprised one has lasted over 6 weeks.

Here is a hill you will get to climb if you do the Great Floridian in Clermont

Re: First Ironman suggestions

If you are not hung-up on Mdot then you might look at the Vineman. No need
to do Mdot and possibly better not to be bothered with all the hype.

Actually Ken, no. It is not a hill by Florida standards. It's a mountain.

Funny... I have done a few different IM & IM Distance races, including
Clermont. I respect that hill. : )

We can argue all day (and often do) about which race/course is
toughest, but this course "feature" stays with you, well after your
day is done.
