Sore calf muscles

Running is a regular part of my training. Generally I get slightly tight
calfs but no real problems. I always stretch before and after running and
cycling. Last couple of runs I have had sore muscles after about 8km or so
when I stop for a pee. I carried on and it went away slightly but then
really stiff at the end - after about 16km. Any suggestions as to what I
need to do to avoid this please.

Race coming up in 2 weeks so I don't want to rest!

Re: Sore calf muscles

Broooz,

I have/had similar problem, and it is frustrating when you know that
rest is probably the best option.
But since you need to keep training, here is what worked best for me:

Massage: if you don't know or can get to one, do it yourself -
before/during/after the run, just rub firmly the muscles downward
until the pain subsides

Wrap like hell: get a tube or elastic medical wrap (my calves probably
resembled a mummies for a couple of weeks)

and RELAX - when the pain creeps in I slow down, take the pressure
off, take my mind off my lower legs

If that doesn't work, go to the pool and do some underwater workouts

Hope this helps

d

Re: Sore calf muscles

I am guessing you are keeping properly hydrated?

I think so thanks - if anything I drink too much as I need to stop for a pee
which is most annoying.
