Congratulations and good luck.

I wear a wetsuit with a tri singlet. By singlet, I mean that the jersey
is form fitting and not loose.
My singlet has pockets on the side. I do like the pockets on the side.
Some experimentation might be in order. There are wider shorter pockets
and taller thinner pockets. I require pockets that are thinner and
taller or my gels fall out of the pocket. The wider pockets tend to mean
that my gels must also lay lengthwise on my body. This means that the
gels tend to scratch me through the mesh, during the run. I can be cut
up pretty bad in a short practice run, so I have never worn these short
wide pocket singlets on a longer run or race.
During the bike I have all the gels that I need on my bike.
I have noticed that the pockets tend to keep my gels cold when swimming
in cold water and transitioning to a cold bike/run. This has caused some
back cramping during the bike and especially the run portion of the
race. No, I don't race with my gels in my pocket during the swim, but
the cold wet material on a cold wet day does not allow me to keep as warm.
However, I do enjoy the singlet on a hot day because they can be very
breezy.
I also have come to appreciate any mesh on the side (love handle) part
of the body. The mesh allows me to stay much cooler.

I like Zoot. I haven't really tried many tri jerseys as I raced in bibs
for several years. My needs change depending on the length of my race.
For instance, I will wear a swim suit during a sprint or a one piece tri
suit. However, I require separate pieces for longer races because I need
the length and I might want to go to the bathroom, and I will change my
shorts from bike to run, and even my shirt if it gets salty (crusty).
If it is a very sunny race, I want full coverage and as light of color
as as possible so that I do not get too hot or sunburned.
Something else to think about, depending on the race: race rules.
Some races require the torso to be covered, some allow parts of your
torso to be bare. Some races require your zipper to be zipped fully (not
even a little notch down for extra coolness or you get a penalty or even
dq'ed). |
