Hip and leg pain while biking

Hi,

I am not sure whether this newsgroup in the right one for such
questions. I will appreciate if somebody could direct me to right
place if this is not the right one.

I trained for a short triathlon last spring (Spring 2007), and while
biking on rollers one day, I felt an intense pain in the LEFT outer
thigh (from hip to knee), so bad that I had to stop biking after about
30 minutes. It was mainly because I had not biked continuously for 30
minutes in a while, and riding on rollers meant that there were no
down hills, so I had to keep pushing the paddles to maintain my speed.
The pain got a little better (in a few days) and I started riding
again. The pain keeps coming back whenever I am in a high gear and
pushing on the paddles real hard. Now a days, my left hip is also
giving me some trouble. The trouble has also started to show up in my
running, and I find myself hard to keep my pace in running.

Does anybody has any thoughts about it? I have been doing some
stretches for it, but without much improvement. One stretch I have
been doing is: I lie down on my back, bend legs a little bit so that
the bottom of my feels is flat on ground, knees slightly bent. I then
straighten out one leg (say left) and push right knee over to the left
(over left leg), the (inside of) right knee tries to touch the ground.
This is helping a little bit, but now much.

I will appreciate any thoughts.

Thanks,
Yogi

Re: Hip and leg pain while biking

Looks like you're a little fatigued. Try going back to basics and
stay at base for a while (Heart Rate no higher than 140 BPM). Had the
same problem with my knee. I lowered the intensity for about 2 weeks
(same distance, just not as fast) and I haven't had a problem in the 5
Months sinced it happened.
