Olympic to Iron - is it possible?

I have participated in three Olympic distance races and under peer pressure
signed up for Ironman AZ next spring. Is one year enough time for an 80 lb
overweight wannabe athlete with determination? Or am I screwed?

You have plenty of time. But you have to train.
I recommend the book "Training Plans for Multisport Athletes" by Gale
Bernhardt. There is a chapter with a 27 week training plan for an
Ironman or a 13 week for beginners, so you could have around 6 months
to build a really strong base. I wouldn't worry to much about the
weight, as long as you train and start eating better, it will go away.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for the great advise, I bought the book. Hopefully it gets here
soon. Most of the reaction I have received from friends and family has been
quite negative. I hope to prove them wrong.

Yes. But the book you want is "Going Long" by Friel and Byrn.
