Forerunner 305 - Waterproof

Hi,

Garmin says that Forerunner 305 is Waterproof: IEC 60529 IPX7 standards
(submersible in one meter of water for up to 30 mins.)

Does it works ?

Going for ironmen I would be longer in the water. Is this a problem.

Thanx for your help. Michael.

be careful about that!!. I have heard that people had brokentheir garmin
305 by swimming with it. According to their experience, it is not as
water proof as garmin says. But on the other hand, garmin replaced
their devices for them pretty rapidly and without too much hassle.

Would also be wary of it getting ripped off in the swim - don't have
one but they look quite bulky. If it's IM distance then spending 5
seconds strapping it on in transition probably won't ruin your day and
might well save you a lot of money or hassle.

They do say it is not suitable for swimming - pity then that they market it
for triathlon!

That is why I am asking. For me it would be perfect:
Going for triathlon, montainbiking and running. And in addition you have
gps. But if it is not waterproof I am not buying it.

Thanx for your help.
Greetings from germany, Michael.

It does say waterproof but the handbook specific says it is not for
swimming. On the MotionBased forums
[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

there is loads of discussion about this with various answers. I've swum
with it, but not with it on my wrist. It never worked for GPS.

I put it under a swim hat wrapped in pastic wrap, didn't work. I put it
in a waterproof bag and tied it arund my waist and let it floar behind
me, didn't work.

Then I used it for an IM race, I put it in my T1 bag when it was just
3-weeks old. Admittedly I'm not fast, but afraid it died during the
last 8-miles of the run. You can find some of my comments on my blog,
but I should really write a full review of it.

My best advice is that if you decide to buy one, put a small piece of
electrical tape over the four connectors on the back of the watch.
Otherwise you risk having charging and PC connection problems.

I have one, and tried it once swimming in the ocean. Never had a
problem, but data quality for the swim was poor.

I still like my GF 305, and I've heard about units failing in the
water, so I just don't use for the swim. It does get sweaty and wet all
the time, no problem with that either (I always rinse and dry it well
soon after using it). I use it for training and racing and has given
me good results for the bike and run. I can live with that.

I have mixed feelings about using it during long races. 5 hours into
the race, when you start wondering about why you're doing what you're
doing, you start feeling the weight of that big thing attached to your
wrist...

Enjoy,

Re: Forerunner 305 - Waterproof

I've used my Garmin 301 for open water swim training. I dont use it in
the my tris. The 301 is similar to the 305.

I put it in a ziploc baggie and then stuff it in my swim cap. You have
to figure out how to push the start button by feel. I swam a few miles
with it on multiple training sessions and it always stays dry.

To reduce the massive geek factor of a GPS bulge on the top of your
head, I recommend removing your swim cap swiftly while exiting the water...
