Time for quick poll of fellow racers. How many of you peed while riding
your bike or observed this practice in a race? Me and the racer in front
of me were provided a shower from what we thought was a leaky water bottle
at the Auburn Int. Race today. Needless to say we were both a bit pissed
off, forgive the pun. On of my buddies at the race said it is not an
uncommon practice. I spent the last 15 miles of the ride determining how to
handle the situation and choose to walk up to him in transition and tell him
he was an a$$hole and no where near fast enough to make saving 30 seconds
worth pissing on fellow racers (This was 1/2IM distance race). A real
shower a few beers later I have calmed down enough to talk about this with
out 4 letter words but still am dumbfounded by this ignorance. Any
opinions?

I have never done this nor have I seen it done. However, I have heard
lots of my fellow riders say that they have, including a female rider.

I have, but never in such a way that it was possible for another cyclist
to get wet. Did he pee over his shoulder, or were you drafting? If he
peed over his shoulder, you're right, he's a jerk. If you were drafting,
perhaps we should all pee on you. :-)

Just out of curiosity, what was his reaction? Did he apologize, or tell you
to step off?

Piss directly on me? No. Caught in spray in a race? Yes. I've had
sweat from other people hit me too. Who cares -- it doesn't carry
cooties.
Maybe I wasn't thick skinned

How stupid are you to just let it happen and mull it over rather than
simply avoid it or yell at the guy if you don't like it? It only
costs you a few more seconds to use your brain and keep your eyes open
in the middle of the race to see what's going on.
I mean, I could understand someone heading to a top finish
concentrating so hard they couldn't even contemplate voicing
objections on the spot, but as a MOP person are you going so hard you
can't even figure out how to stop it or avoid it? Wow.

It's worthwhile pointing out stupid comments -- hopefully it will
discourage other similar comments.

So you're complaining about a few drops of urine spray? Unless the
guy was bleeding in his urine, the stuff is sterile. You could
probably drink it with no ill effects.

Check the archives for anything with the word pee in it. It's been one
of the favorite subjects for as many years as I've been here. Lots of
colorful details in some of the longest threads you can imagine being
spun on the subject. Highly entertaining.

What, you can't?
;-)
I was kidding. I was having a difficult time figuring out how one gets
drenched in urine from another cyclist unless one is very, very, close at
the time. AJ claims to have been 25 feet back at the time. This makes me
think that (a) AJ didn't really get touched by any/much urine, or (b) he
was much closer than 25 feet and chooses not to admit it, or (c) porn
stars use triathlon training to keep that fit look.
Drenched no, a bit of spray yes. The guy in between us got the worst of it.
Remember we were both passing, so yes, we got closer than 25 ft but only
after we figured out what was going on and got off the left.
I have to admit, based on the responses from the group here, I have
come to the realization this must be a more common thing and not that big of
a deal. I supposed I overreacted a bit although I now know how to
differentiate between a leaky water bottle and a leaky cyclist.

Hi A.J.
I hadn't commented until now, but I don't want you to get the idea that
your reaction was unusual or uncommon. I've gotten spray from spit and
someone blowing their nose, but never have I been caught in a spray of
urine.
I'm not what I'd call unreasonable, but if someone in front of me was
taking a leak on their bike, I'd expect them to be sure no one else
would be caught in the spray. I'm not sure, but I have to believe that
peeing from your bike would get you disqualified, or at least penalized
in a USAT race. I mean, you can't strip in the transition area, right?
Anyway, hopefully the guy will be more careful in the future.

Spit and stuff out the nose is way less sanitary than urine.

Unless you were draftig, in which case it was probably intentional.

How do you distinguish between someone who is incontinent and someone
who does it intentionally? I mean, assuming he doesn't whip it out (I'm
normally very careful to use gender-neutral pronouns, but I think I'm on
solid ground here). And it's not that uncommon for people to have GI
trouble and take a dump in their shorts, though thankfully it's never
happened near me.
I did hear that they were very strict about people not peeing in the
penalty area in T2 at IM Hawaii since it used to get pretty gross by the
end of the day.

Why would you want to pee on your bike ? Are you trying to clean it ? I
think soap and water works better, but if you are a stickler for a clean
bike and there is no water around in the middle of a race, I guess this
would work. Just don't use too much "pressure" around the bearings area
