another sprint question: cycling gloves

Any opinion on using cycling gloves in a sprint? For a short (30-40
minutes) ride they don't seem necessary but rather a trade off between
transition times and ride comfort.

I wouldn't bring them. You won't even notice since you'll be busy passing!
Seriously, there's already too many things to remember to bring to your
first tri.

You can take them off easily enough before T2, so it shouldn't hurt you
much there. It's a little harder to put them on while riding, but you
can do it. If you're in it to win it, though, you might not want to
waste even the time going slower on the bike to put on and take off the
gloves.

I decided to wear gloves, because when I tested out swimming and then
riding I found my hands were soft from the swimming and stuck
uncomfortably to the handlebars. I wore my looser pair of gloves so
they would be easier to take off. On the other hand, when it came to the
event I forget to take them off when I started the run. I realized just
outside transition and threw them at the base of a tree, risking a penalty.

My report of my first triathlon is at:

Hi Bryan,

I've never worn them in triathlons and I've never missed them. I
personally don't think it's worth the time. Besides, you'll be on your
forearms down on your aerobars anyway, so there won't be much pressure
on your hands.

I don't use gloves either - just too much to remember in T1. I typically
ride with them - but don't miss them in the least during a race.

Leave the gloves at home. But if you must wear them.... attach them to your
handlebars and put them on AFTER you've mounted your bike and you're up to
speed. Don't waste time in the transition area fiddling with them.

Rep Power: tri4hale is on a distinguished road
I have in years past tried the gloves in all distances. Putting them on in T1, and on bike. I have found that any distance under 1/2 Iron or non mountain bike it is unnessary. If the tri is a Mt bike one or longer than international i would recomend them.

If you forget to remove them in T2 just keep them for the run (if you are using them in a shorter race) as typical sprints only have 2-4 mile runs and the gloves will not effect your run splits. In longer races you can spend the extra few seconds in transition to do the key things (hat, race belt, GU, water, bodyglide, sunblock if needed and gloves on/off) without it seriously effecting your splits. If you are doing those remember to streatch and kill 2 birds with one stone.
