flopping braid

I'm doing my first sprint triathlon May 14 (Clemson, South Carolina).
I've been faithfully building my base in all three sports but haven't
done many combined workouts. So I just discovered a problem today. I
have waist length hair which I always wear in a braid (or occasionally
two). It has never bothered me running, but today was the first day I
tried running with my hair still sopping wet from swimming. And my
braid went flop flop flop on my back in a most annoying way. What's the
best solution? I was hoping not to wear a hat but maybe I need one
anyway for the sun (I usually run before sunrise). If I put my braid in
my hat is there any chance it will stay?

Re: flopping braid

Your hair will dry somewhat on the bike if that helps.

The hair that I still have is short, so I no expert on this, but I
always use a hat.

Re: flopping braid

Hi,
try folding the braid in half and then tie it with a rubber band to get
away from that annoying slapping on the back. I also sometimes do that
with two braids. The hat helps keep everything in place, I wouldn't put
my braid in the hat. Too hot - too heavy...

Re: flopping braid

you could try the 'pipi longstocking' approach and braid in some
pipecleaners to position them any way you want!

or, being the year of Star Wars, you do do a tribute and roll them into
a cinnimon bun thing. but that might be a problem under a bike helmet..

or, probably more realistically, use french braid to shorten it up, and
fold up and bobby pin for the run.

Try two braids or three.

Hey, you tried my idea out! Glad to hear it worked for you. You look
very happy.

I saw that you were having problems remembering. Are you still having
problems? Or was it from the stress of the upcoming tri? If you are
sleeping enough, I suggest eating some extra carbs to see if that helps.

Good tri Pam ~

Thanks! I had some problems with waking up too early. I can't eat more
carbs--I'm diabetic controlling with diet and exercise and have to stick
to under 100 grams a day or my blood glucose goes too high. I can eat
more just before or during exercise, which is why even for a sprint tri
I was serious about eating during the event.

I have tried to research this for a friend of mine, but I haven't really
come up with an answer yet. If anyone has an answer, I would like to
hear it.

I was wondering specifically if you have tried to carb load immediately
after a workout, because the glycogen is supposed to go straight to your
open and waiting muscles then, instead of to your blood sugar. It would
have to be something simple so it is absorbed right away (within the 15
minute window), rather than something that will sit around and take a
long time to be digested and cause your blood sugar to go up later when
the muscles are not so accepting.

Not having enough carbohydrate fuel does make the brain shut down
because the body is taking the fuel that is needed that the brain would
normally utilize.
