bike/run in swim suit

Is it ok or comfortable to do the bike and run portions while wearing my
regular bike short style (no chamois) swim trunks?

Your help is .....well.....helpful

You can certainly do it--many people do entire races in regular Speedos.
As to comfort, that certainly depends on the length of the race and how
tender you are. I usually wear tri shorts (with a quick-drying fleece
chamois) for races up to half-Ironman. For my one Ironman race, I
changed into bike shorts and then to running shorts because I thought
comfort was more important than speed for a race that long (I was just
trying to finish under 17 hours).

Hey Harold,

Did you ever post your write up from your ironman?

Yes, I did. It was posted in Sept. 2004. If you can't find it through
google groups let me know.

Re: bike/run in swim suit

This weekend I did my first tri - it was a short one, so one of the
things I was using it for was to test my apparel. I swam in my bicycle
shorts, and never even thought about it once. I was afraid that having
the wet chamois in my crotch would be uncomfortable during the bike or
the run, but I never even noticed it. I plan on wearing the same thing
for every race I do from here on out.

make sure the shorts have fairly thin fleecy synthetic chamois, and
you'll be fine. one thing though is to make sure they have a drawstring
rather than just elastic so they dont slip down while swimming.

Hopefully those plans don't include a half or full iron distance race. That
wet chamois will get really old on a 56 or 112 mile bike. An then there's
the run.

Re: bike/run in swim suit

Not to gross anyone out, but in my experience if it's a hot day the the
chamois is pretty wet by the time I've been riding my bike for half an
hour anyway.

You're right, though - my plans don't include a half-iron until next
season, or even the season after. But by then I will have gotten to
test it out a couple times at the international distance, and I can
easily do a few training sessions that include biking 50+ miles
starting out in wet shorts, so if it stops working I'll figure
something else out.

Some of us use our "glutes" instead of a draw string. ; )
