| It's gotta be the shoes! (ITBS success story) FWIW:
I've had some issues with IT band syndrome for years. It was mostly
under control--occasional slight soreness for < 24 hours after runs in
the 2-4 hour range--until last fall, when, as some of you might recall,
I had to bail out of my first Ultra due to ITBS pain.
The thing that had gotten my ITBS under control the first time was when
a running shoe store put me in a stability shoe. I had previously tried
physical therapy, orthotics, and a cortisone shot with no luck. The
problems cleared up very quickly after switching to the new shoe
(Saucony Grid Omni 3).
Last spring, a new podiatrist made me new orthotics and told me to go
with a neutral shoe, moderate cushioning, stating that all the stability
I needed would come from the orthotic.
Well, I switched back to a stability shoe (Asics Gel 110) last week and,
voila, the ITBS pain has cleared up already. So, at least for me, the
right shoe seems to make a huge difference. (I am still using the
orthotics in the new shoe; I've tried it both ways, and it seems better
with it.)
