surviving injury down time

I've been off training from bad injury since early December and it's
really starting to get to me. It's an old spinal problem re-injured; the
major pain has subsided, but my left leg is weak and partially numb.

I've had every MRI and test possible, and have a neurosurgeon
appointment in two weeks. But I'm going through serious training
withdrawal, gaining weight, and turning into a royal prick. And need I
mention the whining?

I'm getting in some swimming, but running aggravates things and on my
low-pain days the roads have been too icy to cycle. I hate being idle
and I'm not sure how ling I'll be off.

I'd appreciate any suggestions on how to mentally survive this crap, or
just some sick humor would help.

Eric

Re: surviving injury down time

eric - i can sympathise
my scull (i do rowing and tri) is in for repairs.

im just enjoying getting a bit fatter, being a bit lazy for a change,
my sex drive is a bit higher so thats a bit of fun.

just dont get too fat (fat aint nice) and enjoy the swimming. there
may be something nice to look at.

you need to vary your swims so you dont go out your mind going up and
down for 90 mins.

Re: surviving injury down time

Eric,

I feel for you big time. I would have to suggest this is a great time to
focus on things we triathletes really neglect. Flexibility and nutrition.
Read as much as you can and really look at your nutrition. See if you can
improve that. Also, start doing Yoga if you don't already. It is an AWESOME
tool for triathletes. I feel so much better now that I do it on a regular
basis. I am not nearly as tight as I use to be and workouts feel better.
Water Jog as well. I had a friend that trained for 6 months for a marathon
doing nothing but water jogging and he said it was great.
Get creative, but your best bet is doing stuff in the water.

Yoga? great idea...I've been putting that off for so long. Maybe I can
combine yoga & water? or at least do both on the same trip to the Y
(they have a yoga class I've been procrastinating about)
Thanks
