For those who have done the Pigman 1/2 Iron Triathlon in Iowa, what
are your thoughts? I'm a relative novice to triathlons and have never
done a 1/2 Ironman. Is it a decent bike and run course? Thanks!
Mary,
I did the Pig "gig" this past summer, my first, as well as my first
half.
Overall I thought it was a well laid-out bike course, winding through
many small towns with many hospitable volunteers, with numerous
"bluffs" (Iowa hills) through the scenic cornfields. My only crit of
the bike was about a half-dozen or so railroad tracks, and although
there was plywood placed over them, the amount of water bottles and
other accessories that bounced off the crossing bikes (no trains btw)
was quite a site; from my middle-of-the-pack point-of-view.
The run was an out-and-back, winding up a couple of moderate bluffs
and a bridge over a mid-size river (the Cedar I believe). I heard that
the previous year was quite hot and this point of the run (over the
bridge) provided a nice breeze.
The weather this year was exquisite (72 degrees at my 1PM finish!),
sunny (bring suncreen -- no trees!)
