I would like to share with you the opening of registration for the 2nd
Annual Wild West Relay, also affectionately known as "Get Your Ass Over the
Pass." The running relay event will be held on Friday - Saturday, August
19th - 20th, 2005, under the calendar of a full moon.
This 195-mile relay starts in Fort Collins, at the Budweiser Tour Center,
and winds through rural and isolated sections of northern Colorado and
Wyoming, passing through several small mountain and ranching communities.
Spectacular scenery is a given, as teams will cross over Sand Creek Pass
(10,269 feet) and Rabbit Ears Pass (9,426 feet). Sixty-seven miles of the
relay route traverse through Roosevelt, Medicine Bow, and Routt National
Forests; fifty-nine miles of the route are on dirt roads. The last leg of
the relay is primarily on bike paths and trails through Steamboat Springs.
The finish line is at the Steamboat Springs Middle School where the
Butcherknife Trail runs right onto the school's track.
Teams of twelve can compete in their choice of Men's, Women's, Mixed, Open,
Master's, Flatlander's (all team members live below 2,500 feet), or the Hash
House Harriers (the red dress division) categories. Each runner will run
three legs averaging 5.25 miles. Hard-core runners can form a 6-person Ultra
Team where each person runs one leg averaging 32.5 miles or each runner runs
6 legs in a manner similar to the 12-person teams.
In most relay events, teams are responsible for asking friends and/or family
to be volunteers to act as race marshals or to staff the runner exchanges.
As a way to support the small local communities on the relay route, the Wild
West Relay offers teams an alternative: rather than finding volunteers,
teams can pay a supplementary fee with their registration that will go to
local non-profit organizations that volunteer to work the Relay.
Early registration fees are in effect until March 31st. For more
information, go to [Only registered and activated users can see links. ], or contact the organizers at [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]
We look forward to "seeing your ass on top of the pass!"
