IM distance races near Ohio? - Triathlon Week

Anyone know of full course tri races near Ohio this summer/

I was planning of the Pineman, but their new schedule only shows mini
and half distance at the event. BUMMER. I've been working my butt off
wanting to do the full distance this summer, and the location was very
convenient.

Any info on IM-distance events close to Ohio appreciated

Eric,

The only one's I'm aware of (that aren't already sold out M-DOT events) are
the Blue Devil in Raleigh, NC (which is about an 8 hour drive from Columbus
and I highly recommend), the Chesepeakman which is at Blackwater in Maryland
(probably also about 8 hour drive), or UltraMax which I believe is in Kansas
City.

IM Wisconsin and IM Lake Placid (both M Dot events) are undoubtedly sold out
for 2005.

I'm not sure what's up with HFP - I can't believe they'd just give up on
Pineman after all these years. I sent an email to Shannon Kurek and can't
wait would like to hear what he says.

Thanks for the heads up - I was planning to do the Full distance Pineman as
well (in previous years have done the 1/2 and 3/4 distance races). Great
event!

Now, I have no idea what I'll do - I emailed HFP as well - I'll let you know
what I hear.

Aaaaaaaahhh! That was my big race for next year! I would have signed up
for Madison again if I'd known this race wasn't going to be held.

Send HFP an email - perhaps they will reconsider. I know another dude who
had the Pineman on his schedule too.

Shannon Kurek, director of HFP Racing, confirmed to me in an email that HFP
will no longer produce the Full Pineman. He said the race had become "cost
prohibitive".

I may just make an 11-hour drive and do either the Duke Blue Devil or
the ChesepeakeMan. I'd prefer the latter, but it's the day before my
daughter's seond birthday, so I may need to do the hillier Duke course.

Not sure where you live ... but in Kansas City, Missouri - they have
Ultramax (I'm looking for alternatives too - now that Pineman isn't an
option).

I don't know how to really quantify this, but I can tell you that the Blue
Devil course really isn't THAT hilly. I live in (flat) central Ohio and had
no trouble with the course. Actually there aren't any hills on the BD
course that are any worse than the worst hill at Pineman - just a couple of
more in terms of quantity, but nothing worse in terms of magnitude.
[disclaimer: I am talking about the bike course here. The BD run course is
a bit of a challenge if you're planning on running the entire thing].

Another bit of fuel for the fire: When I was down in NC doing the Blue
Devil last month, I did hear a couple of rumors (I stress RUMORS) that the
race might be moved to a different venue next year. I have no idea
regarding the truth to this, but the logic I was hearing made sense. The BD
web site says that next year's race will be announced in December. Stay
tuned...

So Ultramax tougher course than Duke? Any other options that you are aware
of?

I'm hugely disappointed about the Pineman - that was my 2005 race -
otherwise like you would have signed up for Wisconsin.

I put the DBD course profile up against the IM Wisconsin one, and it
seemed like more hills on DBD, but shorter and not as steep. It's hard
to tell from those things sometimes, but I don't think it will be a
horrible problem even though I live in Indianapolis, which is probably
about as flat as central Ohio.

There's no run course profile for DBD, but if necessary I can take it
easy on the uphills. I was shooting for under 13 hours, although that
was for a flat course.

The map for the run course says something about a hard-packed dirt trail
to the right. Does that mean there's a trail by the side of the road for
the whole race? If so, I'll almost certainly do DBD since I greatly
prefer to run on soft surfaces.

Yeah, I guess there isn't anything to do but wait at this point. DBD
seems to be the frontrunner, although I'm not looking forward to driving
back 11 hours the day after doing an Ironman.

I suppose someone could open up a new race to fill the void left by
Pineman, but I'm very wary about doing a first-year race.

I heard Ultramax is brutal, and I've been to KC once and thought it was
remarkably hilly. They don't have a course profile, but my friend who
did it said the bike tech support people never sold as many new
cassettes (geared lower) than they did the few days before the race (as
people got to town and realized how ugly the course was).

Other than Duke, Ultramax, and Chesepeakman, I haven't found any that
aren't on this list:

Duke and Ultramax aren't on that list, presumably because they haven't
set 2005 dates yet. There's one on there that's an off-road
Ironman-distance, which I'd jump right on if I were a mountain biker.

Harold,

No, the trail they are referring to doesn't follow the road the whole way,
but you may be able to run on soft surfaces anyway.

The entire DBD run course is on a closed, two-lane, asphalt park road, but
there is well-maintained grass on each side. So, you could run off the road
surface in the grass if you want to - and I saw many people doing this for
at least part of the run (including me when my feet started to hurt).

The hard-packed trail they refer to in the route description is nothing more
than a VERY short (100 yd each way?) out and back segment that shoots off
perpendicular to the park road. It is the ONLY part of the course that
deviates from the park road and it is such a non-issue I'm surprised they
even bother to mention it.
