Coaching Advise

I've never actually used a coach for training, except swimming with the
Master's, but I'm interested in some advise. What should I look for in
regards to coaches, price, and commitment?

Thanks!

Re: Coaching Advise

Hi natasja,

This is a good questions and you should look for the following:

Coaching certification from a National Governing Body like USAT
Single Sport coaching certifications like USA Cycling
Under grad or graduate degree in sports science
Experience with tri's- competing in many different distances
Experience coaching athletes for a number of years

Also someone that you get a good vibe from and you feel good communicating with.

I hope this helps.

Re: Coaching Advise

I think one of the main things you should look for is the coach's
philosophy. Before meeting with the coach think of what kind of coach
you want, how you want to be coached, and how you want this experience
to turn out. Next think of some goals you would want as the athlete.
When meeting or finding a coach ask them questions about their
philosophy and objectives. That way you can see if you are on the same
picture as he/she is.

Re: Coaching Advise

Hi Natasja! That is a very good question. When looking for a coach you
should first figure out some of your long/short term goals, your
objectives, what you want to get out this experience and how you want
to be coached. And then when you go to met/find your coach you can ask
them your coaching philosophy and objectives to see if you are on the
same level as he/she is as a coach.

Re: Coaching Advise

In my experience Sports Science graduates are pretty useless. Too much
academia.

Get a coach who has competed at a high level + an accredited coaching
certificate.
