Hi there, has anybody got some good constructive advice for a training
program for my daughter who is contemplating her first tri?
The event is a 600m/6K/2K. She is a strong swimmer (ocean surf lifesaving
background).
Any advice will be gratefully received.
Kind regards,
Andrew

A few questions first:
- How soon is the race?
- How recent is her swim experience? Does she do regular swim workuts?
- Biking background?
- Does she have a bike, and what kind is it?
- Running background?
Assuming she's still actively swimming, her workouts in that area are
likely more than sufficient. Does she have a bike with gears? A mountain
bike would be fine for a first tri. If she's getting a new bike, it's
well worth a few extra dollars to use a reputable bike shop and get
properly fit on her new bike. No need to get a $5,000 racing machine at
this point, tell her to get something she can use whether she stays with
triathlon or not, like a basic road bike, comfort/hybrid bike, or basic
mountain bike. For the run, tell her to find a running store that
performs a gait analysis and matches the runner with the right shoe.
Tell us where you live and someone may be able to make a recommendation
on a good local bike/run/tri store.
PS: If her lifesaving background is a few years in the past, and she's
not swimming a regular swim workout now, it doesn't count. Tell her to
get back into regular workouts.

I find it a little hard to believe that a 12 yr girl old could have a
background in ocean surf lifesaving. Is your header a typo?
