IMNZ Question

Hi there,

I have a question regarding the bike course at IMNZ.
Could someone tell me why the bike splits seems relatively slow?
The bike splits for top ten males this year were in the 4:50's (excepting
Anderson).
Last year they where in the high 4:40's (excepting Bjorling).
The course seems quite flat, or at least uphills are not impressive when you
look at the profile. It's hard to compare, but the course doesn't seem
harder than Roth for example.

So, what's the problem? Is there any wind? bad road surface? Cold weather?
If anybody can enlight me....

Nicolas.

If I remember Ken Davico's race report correctly, it was cold that day.

As a matter of fact, I just looked up his race report on google, and
here's what he said:

"Race morning was cold, very cold. Air temp was a chilly 34 degrees.
Water temp checking in at 58 degrees out at the start line off shore. A
thermometer near the shore indicated 60 but in 30 feet of water it dipped
two more chilling degrees. Wet suit or not that is cold for this
Hawaiian."

He also mentions riding on wet roads that had just been rained on, but
not actually being rained on.

Re: IMNZ Question

I raced it last year and in training i was looking at around 5:45 bike split
but i racked my bike in a time of 6:45.
The ride out is quite quick but coming home even though there are no real
steep hills you seem to be on a gradual climb the minute from the turn
around before coming back down the hill into taupo and then you have to do
it again. I didnt think it was that cold on the course and i really couldnt
feel the force of the wind (maybe i was out of it)

Re: IMNZ Question

Thanks for your comments Tom, for sure cold weather can be one possible
explanation.

Nicolas.

Re: IMNZ Question

1 hour is a huge difference! That can't be explained by the race profile or
the weather. It must have been one of those bad days...
I had one two years ago at the Great Floridian. I was expecting a very fast
bike course (to my standards!) around 5:20. But from km20 I started to feel
really tired and almost fell asleep several times during the course! I
finished with a 6:10 and my time on the marathon is my still PW (personal
worst !)
The only satisfactory point is that I didn't give up that day and kept
walking to reach the finish line....

Nicolas.
