maximum heart rates

When training is based on your maximum heart rate would it best to test for
maximum HR for each different sport. My max for running is 183 and my max
for cycling is 172 this makes my training on the bike at 70-80% of MHR at
only 120-137. When i was training with Mark Allen online all the training
was based my Max HR, that being pretty much 220-age. So what is best, to
train using zones based on the 220-age or by using my max hr for each
individual sports.
thanks

I think the best methodology would be using not the MHR but your anaerobic
threhold (AT). You can find methods to improve your AT easily enough.

Both AT and MHR values change for each different sport. So you should test
for the values for each sport, and you should do the test regularly to keep
track of the changes and change your training accordingly. You can use the
Conconi method to calculate your AT.

Re: maximum heart rates

Concur with Burak, AT (aka LT) is the best measure. Running LT is normally
5-10 bpm above cycling LT. Although it sounds like you are on the right
track if you have identified a different max for each sport. Give the LT
test a try.

How did you calculate different MHR's for the different sports? I
would like to know how to do this. Thanks,

j
