Achilles ache

All of a sudden my Achilles tendon started giving me trouble; if I walk
or light run it starts aching in a couple blocks. Should I rest, or
stretch a lot? Will stretching help or irritate?

I've had that Eric. Sounds like tendinitis. Rest and put ice pack on as
often as you can because if it is that, it's basically an inflammation
injury. Don

I have a slight stiffness and burning feeling in the Achilles tendon
area after runs. I have noticed this come and go over the last few
weeks, but worringly more so after my run yesterday.

How long should I rest?
Will stretching help or irritate?
Is long term stretching preventative?
Are there any preventative exercises?

Re: Achilles ache

If your problem has come on suddenly look for changes in either your
distances, routes or shoes. I suffered an Achilles problem this summer and
eventually traced it to those high backs to running shoes. Examination of
these showed signs of wear indicating that they were putting pressure on my
tendons all be it very slight. I believe this was enough to stress my
tendons sufficiently over the 1000s of contract/relax cycles they go through
during training milages to bring on tendonitus. My solution was to cut these
off and to regularly ice, massage and stretch (only after exercise) my
tendons. I also cut back on the long runs and concentrated on speed sessions
as it seemed it was the number of cycles rather than the power produced that
caused the damage. It does however take time. It has taken three months to
get back to doing regular long runs.

I have discovered some more since - following:-

[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

I think my problem is with my calf muscle, It appears to be above the
achilles when I investigate with my thumbs as the pain begins when I
probe 5+ inches above the base of the heel.

Where does the calf begin and the achilles end?

Eric:
I had the same Achilles tendon injury off and on for many years, until
I learned about the importance of strengthening the calf muscles and
proper running shoes. Strengthen and stretch. The information on
[Only registered and activated users can see links. ] helped me a lot, it might help you too. Good
luck,
Murph

I can not agree with this more.

I had this for two years (my physio thinks I'm stupid but, you tend to try
and work through these things).

Stretch, strengthen (below the knee), and get your footware properly
assessed (even your *street* shoes).

Cheers,
Brad

Re: Achilles ache

Something else to be careful with in the "Achilles care department" is
position on your bike. If you've raised the seat or changed your crank
arms recently that could be a source of the inflammation.
