anyone tried bike shorts OVER trishorts?

I was thinking... yes I know that's dangerous... anyone ever tried
putting bike shorts on over their trishorts before the ride?
I've got a 1/2 IM distance race next weekend and my delicate crotch has
never done more than 30 miles with thin-padded trishorts.
Doubt I'll try anything new at this late point, but thought it might
work to throw bike shorts over my trishorts before riding.

Great idea or dumb stuff???

I do exactly what you describe for any race longer than an Olympic distance
race. Works fine for me.

Unless you have tried this in training, you're asking for trouble, and I speak
from experience on this....at Kona (2001) I was thinking like you, and left my
speedos on under my bike shorts. Seemed like a good idea, but there simply was
too much down there....ended up being very uncomfortable.

You'll find that your body can handle issues differently on race day than in
training; if you're used to riding in tri shorts, going from 30 to 56 miles
will certainly be a stretch, but I think you'll be able to handle it.

If you're really worried, get yourself a padded saddle cover (QR used to make
them...I've had mine for a few years now)...it will help make up for any
deficiency in the way of shorts padding.

Good luck!

But, again, try it out before you race. These things often slide around
on the seat, creating extra problems.

as I wrote, I'd never do this on a race day with out at a good trial
beforehand, usually several
And a Speedo under bike shorts? YEEE-OUCH!!! Those used to rub me raw
if I rode over 15 miles.

I suppose this is as good a time to ask as any, but what, if anything,
do you guys wear under your tri shorts. A friend of mine recommended
some coolmax briefs, but I can see chafing being a bit problematic.

Wear nothing under your tri shorts. Wear nothing over them no matter the
distance of the race.

Q: The only time you need padding is when?

A: When you are sitting on your bike, not even when you are standing do you
need it. So if you need more padding for longer rides, get a Neoprene Seat
Pad.

By they way, we sell them.

Just like with cycling shorts: nothing. You just create more problems
for yourself. If you do an Ironman with coolmax undies under tri shorts,
by the end of the race your crotch will not be a pretty sight. Er, well,
you know what I mean.

I've tried wearing a speedo under bike shorts -- same experience as others. Similarly, I've concluded "nothing" seems to work best. However, I'm thinking a speedo jammer (as opposed to speedo briefs) might work. Anyone tried a jammer?

I think most of us would agree that wearing anything under tri or bike shorts
is just asking for trouble. As has been mentioned, if you're worried about
extra padding buy yourself a neoprene seat cover. Works great for me...

NOTHING comes between me and my shorts

(tried it in practice and did the race with bike shorts over tri
shorts... no problem except a little more heat... so I'll probably skip
the idea next time)

Re: anyone tried bike shorts OVER trishorts?

This may be late but I really like the idea and do it all the time.
NOT a Speedo, but Tri shorts. This gives me the padding and I take the
"regular" bike shorts off to run. I would agree that you need to try
it a lot before racing. I may try the seat cover as some have talked
about, but have had great luck with TRI and regular shorts. Just my 2
cents worth.
