I run shirtless and write my name on my chest in henna ink, but that
might get you more attention than you want :-)

Seriously, though, it's not a bad trick if you want lots of motivation.
I'm sure it helps, particularly when you're dragging. There might be
some running snobs who look down on you for it, but not me. I was going
to do it for my Ironman race, but I didn't want to ruin the shirts (I
had several, since I wasn't sure how cool it was going to be at night).
But then, it kills me to throw away a good water bottle at a bicycle
bottle exchange.

the race people put them on your number in some IMs i've been in----once it was
first name only and already on; and once it was my full name on an adhesive
strip which i was to place at the bottom of the number.

I found a shirt-preserving solution: Clear packing tape. I put the
tape on the shirt, write my name on the tape, and after the race I
just peel it off. No damage to the shirt.

Doesn't the ink smear? Or is it okay if you give it time to dry?

It didn't smear in my marathon. I used a Sharpie and did give it time
to dry (got everything ready the night before). Once it dries it's on
there for good.

I never toss water bottles at the designated water bottle exchange. I toss
the empty to someone in the crowd for a souvenir. If you toss them to the
exchange they will be refilled and some one will have to suck up your back
wash. Have you ever seen what goes into a refilled bottle. It would make
a buzzard puke. It is the reason I like to enter events that use the cheap
pre-filled bottles of drink. It's a good reason to train extra hard so you
get the bottles before they are contaminated with all sorts of slime.

Isn't that an abandoned equipment penalty, just like if you give your
goggles and swim cap to a friend in the crowd.

The races around here long enough to have bottle exchanges all seem to
have the pre-filled gatorade bottles. I'm pretty sure they aren't
refilling them.

No butt Doug puts his in his underwear on sat nights, it makes it much
easier on sunday mornings at the gay bath house, so he can find his
undies without having to match the yellow and brown stains to his
arse.

I ran the 100th running of Boston Marathon with 8 buddies. We all had singlets
on them that said GO MIKE. We all ran different paces. None of us was named
Mike. We just thought it would be funny. You cannot believe how many people
commented to us at different points of the race,

"hey thats original, wish I thought of that"

When inquired about, our reply was

We are a running club and the name of the club is GO MIKE.

Re: Does Anyone Else Out There Put Their Name on Their Shirt During Marathon or Half Marathon?

I once ran the NYC marathon on my birthday. I wrote on my shirt,
"Today is my birthday!" It was awesome.

Another time, long ago, in the "Maryland Marathon" (anyone remember
that one?) I had my name on my shirt, and I was so far down in the
hurt locker that I couldn't figure out how people knew my name.

At IMUSA a few years back, on that last hill into town on the run,
some folks were cheering people on by name. I knew I didn't have my
name anywhere on me, and I didn't know those folks, but they knew my
name just the same. When I got there I turned around and asked them
how they knew. They were looking up the names on the entry list using
our race numbers and cheering us by those names. THAT is how slowly I
was running. They had time to do all of that. I still think those
people were the coolest of all.

I put my name on my T-shirt for a marathon and throughout the race
whenever I would come upon a crowd of spectators I would hear this:
"God is great!!" or "Rock on God!!" I guess it also helped that I was
running fast,,,, finished in 2:23.

I've done IMLP twice - I don't think you could describe my effort on
that last hill as running either time. <g>

They were great. But my heart goes out to the volunteers at the aid
stations last year who stood out in the cold, pouring rain to give us
stuff. My wife worked the Run Special Needs area into the evening and
they really suffered.

But it was a mutual kind of thing. She'd encourage the runners coming
in, and they'd express their thanks for them just being there.

One guy had tied the strings on his bag and his fingers were so cold
he couldn't get it untied. Toni tried, but her fingers were just as
cold and they ended up both laughing and ripping it open.

Tough duty.

Re: Does Anyone Else Out There Put Their Name on Their Shirt During Marathon or Half Marathon?

I try to do the London marathon every year and also wear the same
tee-shirt - with my name on the FRONT. I am invariably way, way down the
field and it is really great when I get cheered on by name. One year my
wife - who also has her name on the front - & I managed to hook up about
half-way and we got a lion's share of the cheers on the home straight which
really motivated. I feel sorry for all the people who take the trouble to
get their name put on the back of their tee-shirts and wonder why they don't
get cheered on so much.

In recent HIMUK, I also found a group of people who had a look-out posted to
check on race numbers so the guys a little further up had time to check
names in the programme and shout out - that was really nice as well. (No, I
wasn't running slowly - I was CYCLING that slowly!) And, having crewed
myself in the pouring rain (and being sworn at by one elite guy who mixed
his transition bags up - running shoes in bike bag), I try to thank
marshalls as much as I can (especially the chap who offered to find me a
beer...)

There was a woman at the Muncie Endurathon with "Claire" on her back. I
thought it was a bit odd, since people wouldn't see the name until she
was past and wouldn't be able to cheer her. Then I figured out she was
deaf, so I guess it didn't matter.
