Iron Training

So I thought I'd update my TA group (that’s Triathletes anonymous), on my training progress. By the way, everyone on this forum is in the TA!

Hi, my name is Scott and I’m a triathalete… (Isn’t that the way we’re supposed to begin?)

My training is SOOOO derailed. I’m signed up to do the Great Floridian Iron Distance Race in Oct. I feel way under prepared and there’s less than 6 weeks left to taper. I haven’t ridden a century in more than 8 months. My longest run has been 14~ miles. These malice’s are not due to poor planning, just life in the way of training. I have not swum more than 2000 meters nor have I practiced my Nutrition Plan. Things are looking pretty bleak for this year’s race.

So… Do I resign? Quit? If I were some sort of “other” athlete, perhaps. But I’m not a “regular” athlete. I’m a Triathlete. More than that, I’m an Ironman! For that reason, I can say “Scott, enough of the pity party! Grab your shoes and let’s get it on!”

Time will remain an obstacle for me right up to taper so to replace distance, I’m going to have to do a lot of speed work. This primarily on the bike because the knee is beginning to bother me again when running :(. That’s easy here due to the hills (speed doesn’t increase but intensity obviously does). I hate this type of training. I’m not a “pain junkie” but I’ll do what it takes.

So… that’s where I am. The diary has me at 350 miles for the last 4 weeks. Not really enough to compete in an Ironman but as I’ve said before, “If triathlon were easy, they’d call it football”.

Race On!

Scott, where've you been? I have been beating myself up for some dropped workouts and feeling sorry for myself for long ones. Thanks again. You put things into perspective for me.

Well, my name is Heather and I'm a Triathlete.

Heather

O.K., Spike's turn to support, Scott you know what you need to do, just remember what worked in the past and get the plan rolling along with your miles. As you said, you are an Ironman already so tell that trick knee of yours that it can talk to my bum shoulder after the race, but only after the race cause you got things to do. I got your e-mail and I think freezing the magic beans is a great idea, then when you do get to the bike you won't have a melted glob of goo to deal with. Heather and I both know you will do what it takes and you will do a great job of it to.
TA lifer, Spike.

Thanks extended family. I did manager an 18 mile run this AM. Woke up at 2:30 and a buddie and I went out at 3AM for the "love". It was a great but slow (hilly) run. My partner forgot his fuel belt so I ended up splitting my nutrition and fluids with him which left me a tad short. We got through it and I feel great this afternoon.

So I go to the pool for my afternoon swim and find it full of kids. Seems there's a Summer Camp going on for the next three weeks. Derailed again! The good news is because I live on an Island, the ocean is never more than 3 miles away. I'll start hitting the beach at lunch. OK... so I have it REALLY tough :) Somebody has to live here.

Thanks for the suport guys!

PS... IM, I was on a Caribbean Cruise for the last week. Neither felt like nor wanted to pay for internet time. I know... I live in the Caribbean but I L_O_V_E it!!!
