Haether, how was your brick?

Hola! I'm off work this week, trying to get stuff done around the house. Today conststed of staining the deck (its about 800 square feet) . I'm also trying to get caught up on yard work, deep house cleaning and cleaning out, etc. Yesterday was my birthday, so there was no workout. But, I did a lot of yard work and got exercise that way. The brick was alright, I have another one tomorrow morning 40/5. I swam today and if felt pretty good. I've decided not to do the half IM next weekend. I just don't feel good about it and I don't want to hurt myself in the process. And that's not the race that I'm training for. I have four solid months left and I need to use every day to my advantage.
How's everyone else doing?
Heather

Rep Power: | Well Happy Birthday IM! I hope it was self reward & not Tequila that kept you in. OK... Well maybe just a little tequila... Hope it was a good one.
You're serious about this thing. Have I asked and have you told me what your race goals are? Swim, bike & run splits?
I'm just coasting. My hams are killing me and I only did 100 this week. No plans for tomorrow although I'm betting wifey has me do something with her.
Have a great weekend.

Rep Power: | I wish I were as serious as I need to be! I understand the "coasting" part. And, the no workout was self reward mixed with a little pinot grigio.
Race goals? Right now, it's to get across the finish line! But, anything around 15 will make me happy. Still working out the split times and I'll have to add in extra for transition and changing clothes. I just can't see riding 112 miles in tri shorts! OWWWWWW.

Rep Power: | Correct about the tri shorts. If you don't have good century shorts, invest the $. There will be Vaseline in the T1 tent but personally, this year I'm going with chamois butter from my T1 bag. Whatever you select, lube well. T1 should only take you 5-8 minutes or so if you're serious about getting out and have packed your T1 bag properly. You'll be in the sun for a while so plan on racing with a short sleve (not tank or sleveless) light colored Jersey. Sunscreen up well. There will also be sunscreen in T1 but I prefer Bull Frog gel because it goes on quickly & stays on. If you need more Trans. pointers, let me know. Don't worry about T1&2 but do have a plan.
I can't remember, will FL be wetsuit legal? The swim is always iffy. The seas can be flat or rough. It's difficult to predict a swim time with much accuracy. IMF is flat so you should move along well on the bike. I assume you're doing a lot of your cycling on the Tri bars? You should be spending a lot of time there. Although the bike is flat, the roads are open and often windy. Tri bars will likely give you a nice advantage. The run will be what it will be. For most people that's about 1 minute/mile slower than your 70.3 run times. This may give you some idea of goal times.
Here's one more piece of advise. S&^% happens. Things WILL go wrong in your race. You won't die and you will finish, Make sure you race to your heart rate zone and not to how well you feel at any given moment. I have faith that you'll surprise yourself on race day.

I lived in San Diego for 11 years! Had an apartment in Coronado and in Mission Valley. I'm so jealous that you're racing there. Its funny that I had to move out to the midwest to discover triathlon, when it was born in San Diego! I'll have to do the Ralph's California Half one year. That's in Oceanside, isn't it? Good luck and let us know how the race went.

Rep Power: | Glad to know you're still here Cris. I hope your race went well. Please post a race report.
I had a nice Sunday ride. Did hill repeats before riding back and picking up wifey, then did 30 more, dropped wifey off, road to breakfast followed by more hill repeats and road home. 63 tough, hilly miles. I'm excited for next Sunday's ride as well. Doing a 17 miler, meeting wifey and doing a 17 mile road race, then 21 miles home. The road race is a point-to-point, "any thing goes race" meaning any bike, any route. There's always a huge turn out and some great sprints at the end. I'll miss those because I'll be pulling wifey but wouldn't change a thing. Next week is heavy run week. Will keep you posted on that.
So... how was everyone elses weekend?

Rep Power: | Mine was good. Did a brick yesterday, but had to cut my bike a little short as I ran over a small log (don't ask) and I think my wheel got misaligned. So, I'll get out my truing tool tonight. Today is scheduled off day, but I spent it cleaning out the garage, cleaning my Tahoe, mowing/weeding the back yard, and painting a door frame/door and large picture window. At least I got a lot of sun and spent the day outside. We went to my hubby's cousin's wedding last night and had a great time. I let my husband let loose and drink while I was the DD. So, he spent the better part of the morning and early afternoon recovering. Oh well, we had a great time and it was nice to get out without the kids.
This next week is a heavy bike week, I'm really looking forward to it! I've also been watching the Tour everyday and it inspires me.

Rep Power: | Well the race I felt went pretty well. It was 1000 meter swim, 15k bike and 5k run. I did the swim in 19min, Avg. 18.6 on the bike and ran a slow 7:20/mile pace. I felt great in the swim, stayed on course. I could not get into a groove on the bike. I tried to power it and I should have been spinning. It was truely rolling hills and just could not get it going. I felt good on the run. Passed a some of the riders that got me on the bike. Overall I felt stronger than my first race back in April. Finished in the top 1/3 in my age group 30/90 and 243/1000 overall. I realize I need to do more brick workouts. Next race is Malibu Tri. I'll keep it going.

Rep Power: | Chris,
Actually, that's a strong race. 18+ is impressive on the bike. 19 minutes/1000 is not bad at all. AND A 7:20 pace rocks. My best 5K race was an 8 min mile so I'm impressed. Great job!

Rep Power: | No doubt! I would love to say that a slow run was 7:20/mile. Sounds like you had a great race. Where did you swim? I know Carlsbad can be really hilly, so I think your bike speed was good too.

Rep Power: | Well thanks everyone. I feel like I have a long way to go for where I want to be. Thanks again for the encouragement. Heather, yes the course was hilly, during the warm up it felt flatter than it was plus I tried to power through the ride when I should have just been spinning. I wanted to be like the big boys. Oh, well great race experience and looking forward to my next race. |

Rep Power: | Yes and No, I got some advice from a guy I train with. He is very strong age group racer. He gave me some advice on the wetsuit. Taking it off at the shore and not running into the transition with it on. It was easier to take off in ankle deep water and not dealing with it in transition. I had a strong T1 but T2 I was all flustered. I ran out with no glasses or hat. Decided to run back than said forget about it. My wife saw me do this fro outside the Transition area and told me later how she screamed, "what are you doing?" She was a few hundred yards away looking down. She is a runner and this Tri thing is new to her but she is very competitive so she knew that was a waste of time. I think I took to much Powerbar Endurance on the bike and needed to add more water in on the ride also. I felt a bit sick in the beginning of the run. Once I came over that I was good. About 20 or so people passed me on the bike that I can remember and I caught about 12 or so on the run.
Like I said I before I was about 205lbs in Sept. 2005 and now I am 175lbs. I had a surfing injury that took me away from jogging, not running. I went to rehab fro the knee, she told me I had to do something other than run, so I joined a club that had a pool and started swimming. Once she ok'd me to bike I got on the stationary bike and my Mtn. Bike. After all was said and done and I shed 15lbs I was ready to run and said let's try doing Tri's again after 10 years. 10 years ago I was 162lbs and finishing sprint Tri's in an hour. Mostly making up ground on the run. I was running 5ks in the 17's. This is my year to get healthy and build a base. Next year I will see how I can do. It's all for fun and health. Thanks for the encouragement. Any other advice would be helpful.
