I have started using salt tablets during the peak in my training season on long runs and rides and Ironman distance races. I've had good luck with using them so far but it's base on luck more than knowledge. I'm curious of other peoples experiences with them or info you might have.

Using sodium tablets
#2
Posted 22 November 2003 - 03:41 AM
Ever since I switched to a low carb diet to address my cholesterol problem I've been using the salt tablets regularly to maintain my electrolytes during training. My rule for using it is simple: I usually sweat about 1 liter per hour during base training. That figures out to be roughly 800mg of sodium and 190 mg of potassium. For the first 2hrs, I take enough tablets to replace that and drink 1 liter of water. Starting on the 3rd hr, I begin to drink 1/2 gatorade 1/2 water and reduce my salt tablet number by 1/2.
