Hi, my name is Matt and after a 6 year break from competitive swimming, I began again like a month ago. I've been lifting for about three months, and bike everywhere, as I am a poor PhD student. My swimming wasn't motivated with a race in the future so I have looked into tri's and think its a good way to go. I swim like 4k yds a day (6 days a week), bike like 10 miles every day, run like 6 miles per week, and lift 3 to four days per week depending on how I'm feeling. I guess I'm just totally clueless on how to bring these pieces together and in what porportions. Oh and for those who are curious I study marine biology. Glad to be here!

It sounds to me like all you need is a touch of focus to bring it all together, this should not be too hard for you since you are going for your PhD. If you want to get the most out of your training and get ready to race you should either reduce or eliminate the weights and start doing bricks. Bricks are the combination of events in either training or race lengths. Bricks also vary in intensity as your training goes and the race looms on the horizon i.e. the taper week. Distances and combinations are up to you and what you are training for such as a sprint on up to a full IM. This site has tons of info on just about everything you will need to get that focus and do well.
Good luck.
Spike.
