How much of a difference (warmth) in a wetsuit? - Triathlon Week

I have a friend who has very little body fat and has become hypothermic while swimming in cold water.

He is reluctant to spend $$$ on a full wetsuit since he is more a recreational than competitive swimmer.

Do you think a wetsuit would be worth it for him?

It should make a big difference in temp, especially if you pee in it before the start.

I just did an IM swim in 78~ deg. water and almost over heated. I'd say it depends on the suit and the water temp. Most Tri specific suits have 3 mil or so in the chest but drop to .5 mil in the gussetts for mobility. $150 and patience will pick up a nice suit on Ebay. Make sure to go the the mfgs. web site for sizing info. Good luck!
