Swim help please

I have signed up for my first ever tri in early June... went swimming last night for first time. (I can swim, but have never done laps, much less for time)

I ended up doing 500 meters, but had lots of troubles breathing and maintaining any sort of pace.

I don't really have access to a coach, so any basic advice would be greatly appreciated.

I have access to a pool for laps twice a week.

Thanks,

The best thing I did was read the book [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]. I was doubtful about learning from reading a book, but it really helped! I didn't get nearly as worn out and my times got faster almost instantly, I shaved off about 30 seconds a lap in the very beginning. I'm not sure how others feel about this book, but it really helped me!
