Rep Power: | First of all make sure they are really tight around your head because the rubber seals around the eyes should kind of suck on to the area round your eye socket, if they don't and you can't tighten them any further buy a new pair. |

Rep Power: | OK... Here are a few questions and things to consider...
1) Socket Rockets or Mask? "Socket Rockets" are the ones that fit INSIDE the eye orb. They're what most would say are "swim goggles". A mask, like the Seal Mask fits around the OUTSIDE of the eye sockets.
In either case, if tightening doesn't work go the other way. My Cressi Rights leak like hell if I torque them down. Reality is if you have to tighten them to the point of discomfort, they DO NOT FIT YOU! Best to buy them locally if you can. You'll wnt to try them on. You're looking for a "vacuum" to hold them in place. If you can't find a local sport shop try your local SCUBA dive shop. You can pick up some gel defog (and sign up for SCUBA lessons) while you're there. HTH

Rep Power: | I had better results this weekend on a training swim with my "cheap" goggles...it never occured to me it might be operator error. quick question on starting my swim training. I have built up to 700 yards. The problem i encounter is i cant do it without stopping. I normally do the first 100 yards then fall down to 50 then end doing 25. that is the leangth of the pool i am swimming in. Been trying to work on form...going ok...talked with a buddy who is about to start training as well he suggested breast stroke while needing a recovery period then start back crawling. any thoughts? |

Rep Power: | Perhaps a coach. It's difficult to advise on swimming without seeing you. It sounds like your issues may be all technique related. If you're getting enough air to fuel your body, the rest should be easy. Case in point, try running while taking a breath only once every 5 seconds. Pretty tough, right? That's where the rhythm thing comes in. Slow down and work on rhythm first. Remember, slow is smooth. Smooth is fast. HTH.

Rep Power: | Garrett here is a work out program to get you started. At the end of this program you'll be able swim a mile non-stop. Scott is right, try on the goggles in a sport shop if you can. Hope this helps. It helped me when I got started.

nota bene: swim 100, repeat 3 times equals 4x100 = 400.

50 yards...rest for 8 breaths...repeat 3 times.
25 yards...rest for 4 breaths...repeat 3 times.

WEEK two:
200 yards...rest for 12 breaths
100 yards...rest for 10 breaths...repeat 3 times
50 yards...rest for 6 breaths...repeat 3 times
25 yards...rest for 4 breaths...repeat 3 times
total: 900 yards
WEEK three:
400 yards...rest for 12 breaths
100 yards...rest for 8 breaths...repeat 3 times
50 yards...rest for 4 breaths...repeat 5 times

total: 1250 yards
WEEK four:
600 yards...rest for 10 breaths
300 yards...rest for 8 breaths
100 yards...rest for 6 breaths...repeat 3 times
50 yards...rest for 4 breaths...repeat 3 times
total: 1500 yards
WEEK five:

Rep Power: | Thanks hernan. Hope to start that this week. Sounds like if you make week one the rest will fall into place. The only thing it seems a little unrealistic to think about going to 1000 yards nonstop in six weeks. I hope i can and will drown trying. |

You can do it. I started the program in November coming off a knee injury and by the end I was doing what they said I would be doing. It's not about speed. Just go out and follow the program. You will be able to to do it. I have passed it on to a few others and it worked for them. Good luck!!

Rep Power: | Ok had my first taste of week 2 last night. I was surprised but i was able to swim 200 without stopping. A major feat considering where i started. The only thing is that some of my swimming gets sloppy just to finish the training. Although i have found once i get to the 50's and 25's i cruise. I sure its just a mental thing. After doing the 100's the others seem alot easier. I attempt to clean up my technique once i get to the smaller swim reps. Is this still benifical? |

Bingo, my friend!
The workout listed above looks really good. I'd stick with that.
However, here's some more advice. Train yourself (easier said then done, but try it) to use your workouts as "an out" and as a way to think and reflect on your day. You'll be training and meditating at the same time. I know you're thinking, "how can i do all that and keep track of my distance?!?" With practice it'll become second nature. Soon you'll be counting the hours and minutes at work until you can get home and get to your daily workout and use it as a release to get away from lifes every day pressures.
Alot of times when you count every single lap, yard and stroke, your body psychs your brain out (or vice versa) and you feel tired even though your body really isn't. So by thinking about something else you'll essentially be able to do more distance. This will give you confidence and you'll eventually be able to go into a workout and complete it based off of pure stubborness simply because of your new found confidence in yourself and your abilities. |

Rep Power: | I understand exactly what you mean about psyching out your mind. Last night i completed my first continous mile swim. My mind started in on me about 1000 yard mark. Then i started secound guessing my self on my lap count. I pushed through and when i finished stopped my watch a little slower than i expected (43 min) but i was overtaken by a sense of accomplishment. Not bad for a average thursday after a long day at work! Oh well enough patting of the back time to refocus for my next swim. |
