training suit

I recently restarted swimming and purchased a nylon/lycra jammer for training. It has worn out in less than 5 months with only 3 practices/week. My old nylon suits used to last a year with 3 hour practices 5 days/week.
Any suggestions on training suits that last - before I shell out another 30 to 50 bucks?

If you are training in a pool. The Chlorine will eat away at your bathing suit.

Try rinsing it off in the shower and ringing it out. Repeat that two or three times to get as much chlorine out as possible.

The damage occurs when you let it dry without rinsing it out first.

5 months, 3 times per week isn't bad. My suits usually don't last 6 months. Note, a lycra suit will wear out after a couple years even if it never touches water. So, the first question, is how old was the suit before you started wearing it. Assuming the suit was new, the manufacturer suggests rinsing thoroughly in cold water after each use. Don't wring the suit hard -- that over stretches the suit and wears it out faster. Don't sit on abrasive surfaces -- concrete, wood, rocks, etc.

Finally, buy suits from the "grab bag" at swim store (there are several on-line). They might not be as pretty, but they'll only be 1/2 the cost.

Or just buy a less expensive suit for training. And race in your good suit.
