They are displayed below your username on all posts that you make. You can select the image that best describes yourself from your profile options. In order to show an avatar next to your name, you need to go into the 'my settings' button on the top navigation. From there select 'edit options', at the bottom of the page there is an option to 'change avatar' - you can pick one of the default one or upload your own (no more than 100 pixels wide).
