Bike/Run in Wet Biking Shorts?

I am doing my first sprint tri next month. I am wearing a
3/2 shorty wetsuit, and intend on wearing my biking shorts
under it. Is that feasible? Is there any reason that biking
in wet biking shorts will be painful? Any problem if I then
run in those shorts as well? I am thinking that the pad might
cause chafing, etc.

I don't see a problem biking is wet biking shorts. Most shorts these days are made to dry quickly. The shorts should be dry by the end of mile 1 or 2. Running in biking shorts may be different. Depending on the size of the pad, it may feel like you are running in a diaper. My suggestion would be to get a tri-suit. It's a one-piece suit that has a small pad. It's good for biking and running. Or even wear running shorts on the bike. In a sprint distance bike (usually around 20K) you should not need a lot of padding. Just wear whatever you've practiced in.

Hi there,

While I support the suggestion of purchasing Tri-shorts, I would also/alternatively suggest purchasing Body Glide. In case you're not familiar with the product (which may go by other names), it's a pasty lubricant which comes in a stick much like a solid anti-persperant. You could apply it to any part of your body which you're worried would chafe from the suit/liner, and it would remedy the problem. I also use it around my wrists and ankles to facilitate wet-suit removal, and around the collar/neck area so I don't feel like my wet-suit is choking me; and, without trying to be controversial or offensive, it's great for preventing nipple burn/chafing during the run.

Good-luck with your race

If you want to wear shorts, get Tri specific bike/run shorts. I wear them up to Half Iron distance races. The padding is smaller so they don't feel like you have a diaper on in the run. Second Bucky on the Body Glide. Put it everywhere there is friction. Ankles, toes, calfs, neck, underarms and yes, especially the nipples. Do not use vaseline with the wetsuit. It will deteriorate the neoprene. Good luck!
