A jogging newbie...

Ok, I am 19 and weighed 279 lbs. I don't LOOK like I weigh 279 lbs, but I am still overweight. I started jogging and eating healthy exactly three weeks ago and so far I have lost 10 lbs. I am at 269 now. :) But I really don't care how much I weigh since muscle weighs more than fat and I am trying to build muscles at the same time.

Anyways, when I started jogging on the treadmill everyday at 6 mph, I could barely go one lap without dieing for breath, but for the past 3 days, I have gone a whole MILE without stopping! But here is the thing. I am afraid I am going to hurt myself because of my weight and the high-impact of jogging. My shins hurt the most, but I have noticed my knees starting to hurt a little (but not badly.)

Do you have any advice for me? A friend told me I should switch out biking and jogging every other day, but biking doesn't burn very many calories unless you do it forever, and I don't have a whole lot of time...
