Heart Rate Monitors

I've been looking at Heart Rate Monitors for a couple of weeks now. Initially, I was very excited by the new Nike Triax C-series, but haven't seen any good reviews of previous Nike HRMs. Polar gets great reviews, but they're bulky and butt-ugly. Another brand I've heard great things about is Sports Instruments.

Does anyone have any experience with these things? I should probably cross-post this in the cycling forums, too...

Besides fashion... what functions are you looking for in a HR monitor? How much are you willing to spend?

Thanks, Fed, for your response. I actually bought the ECG5 from Sports Instruments and am very happy with it. Of course, learning how to effectively train using it is going to take some time.

I got mine very cheap from a place called eDiscountBike ([Only registered and activated users can see links. ]) that sells overstocks. I think it was US$70 shipped.

ECG 5

Great choice! Ironically, that is the one I train with. You really got a great bargain too. They typically sell for much more. I purchased mine 2 years ago and have been relatively happy with it. The one thing I don't like is that it does not give you your max hr for the workout or the min hr for the workout. What I do like is that it gives you your avg. hr for each lap. I have used the ECG for both biking and running. The battery went out once and the company replace it in just 10 days which I thought was good turn-around. Let me know how you like it.
