New NW marathon!
Event Date: June 15, 2003
The North Olympic Discovery Marathon is promoted and managed by the Port Angeles Marathon Association. The PAMA was founded in 2002 by a group of local athletes. The vision of having a potentially world-class event in our backyard showcasing the North Olympic Peninsula and the Olympic Discovery Trail is what brought this event to fruition. All members of the PAMA have competed in world-class events such as the Ironman and the Boston Marathon. They intend to apply this wealth of knowledge to the race and create a destination event that will be well respected within the athletic community.
The North Olympic Discovery Marathon is a run on a unique point-to-point course that offers spectacular views of the Olympic Mountains and the Strait of Juan de Fuca. The race is a USTF sanctioned event that will hopefully be a Boston Marathon qualifier in its first year.
Race headquarters will be located in downtown Port Angeles. Athletes will be transported from race headquarters to Sequim (approx. 30 minute drive) via bus. The race will take place primarily on the Olympic Discovery Trail. This rails to trails course is a wide mixed hard surface trail with excellent footing. The course is fairly flat and fast. Cool June weather can be expected due to the cooling effect of the Strait of Juan de Fuca making for great long distance running conditions.
Aid stations will be located approximately every 2 miles along the course supplying water, sports drinks, etc.
A street fair, merchant expo, massage tent, and food stands will be available to all participants and their supporters. In addition, the Port Angeles and Sequim area have so much to offer. Port Angeles is gateway to Victoria B.C. Canada, the crown jewel of Canada. Victoria is only a short ferry ride away. Sequim is the lavender capital of the US. Port Angeles is also home to Olympic National Park where hiking and river rafting abound. These are only a few of the examples that come to mind. This is truly a destination event.
