Description: GU is an energy gel, designed to fuel your body during exercise. Everyone knows exercise burns calories, but most people forget to replace those calories. Simply walking-about the simplest exercise there is-burns 100 calories per mile. Running, cycling, or even just walking with a backpack easily burn up 400+ calories each hour. At that rate, you run out of energy in about an hour. It's called "bonking" or "hitting the wall," and it feels terrible because your body literally tears itself apart, breaking down muscle cells and other tissues to free up more glycogen for fuel. But even before you reach that point your performance suffers as your body scrambles to keep itself fueled. That's why you need to eat during exercise, especially if you're active for more than an hour.
GU is formulated to fuel you up while you work out. It contains no fiber, fat or protein, which only slow absorption since your body cannot process them during exercise. Its complex carbohydrates are quickly absorbed, to get energy to your working muscles and keep you going. GU extends your endurance, reduces post-workout fatigue and speeds recovery. It's exactly what your body needs.

Pros: quick energy boost, chocolate tastes good
Cons: thick, can't use without water, messy after you eat

I use GUs on long rides or before climbs. You have to drink water afterwards or it will dry out your mouth. Good little boost, but the sticky wrapper after you eat one is a drag.
