Skill training is key..

Over the years I have had the great fortune of writing program for countless triathletes at all levels of ability. Our information is based on clinical assessments derived from dual VO2 max and anaerobic threshold assessments. From these assessments we find that most triathletes who do not arrive to the sport with a cycling background tend to punish the bike and themselves with inefficiency. The cost of riding the bike prior to the run segment in a race bleeds off the majority of the glycogen stores in the liver and musculature. The end result is poor performance in the run or even a DNF (did not finish). The fix we commonly recommend is motor skill development drills on an indoor trainer. We suggest the trainer over the road for a few good reasons. First because you have total control of the intensity and duration without influence from the environment, (wind, hills, heat or cold), Second; the most important things to focus on are time, heart rate and cadence. Not having to be concerned with traffic, lights and other distractions allows for a more dedicated training response at high intensities.
The trainer we use for testing and recommend to our clients is the Kurt Kinetic Trainer. It’s quite, replicates road feel very nicely and is priced affordably. If anyone is interested in one of these trainers or information on any performance related topics check us out at our website, [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] if you decide on a trainer we’ll give you a choice of free shipping or a training DVD valued at $29.95 happy trails.
