I am approaching my late thirties, and the one thing (yes, there is one thing) that I've learned is that a post workout stretch is vital to my recovery. I wish I had learned this twenty years ago - it probably would have saved me a lot of pain and time away from injuries.

always before a workout, and usually afterward.

if i can add 1 important thing when it comes to stretching, before a stretch, take 5 minutes to get the blood flowing to the muscle. i usually jog very slowly on a treadmill for 3-5 minutes. this will make stretching more effective and easier.

take care

I'm in my mid 20's and have taken advice from a few other folks in the same boat and now stretch religiously after workouts. I also stretch in the beginning most workouts after a warm-up.

Something about the blood not settling...

I am in my late-thirties... and I stretch a good 5 minutes or more before and after workouts.

Years ago I took Eric Haar's (Triathlon Training in Four Hours a Week and The Portable Personal Trainer) advice and in addition to stretching after intense runs and bikes, I like to finish my stretching by lying on my back, putting my feet up on a pilates ball, and for several minutes listen to something soothing on the iPod. Something about the blood not settling and working out all the impurities. Nonetheless, it is very relaxing.
