| Jonathan Vaughters Announces Retirement Source: USA Cycling press release
Denver, Colo. - Jonathan Vaughters (Denver, Colo.), one of the most notable American cyclists at the international level in recent years, officially announced his retirement from competitive cycling last night at a ceremony that also served as a preliminary presentation of the 2004 5280-TIAA CREF Development Cycling Team. Vaughters officially hung up his cleats to focus on the management of his latest project along with long-time friend Colby Pearce (Boulder, Colo.)
Vaughters, a familiar face on the European scene, rode for the U.S. Postal Team from 1998-99 before becoming the team leader for the Credit Agricole team in 2000. As the designated team leader in the Tour de France for the French team, Vaughters captured a stage victory in 2001 in the team time trial.
Citing the desire to spend more time with his family, Vaughters retired from the European peloton in 2002 and joined the U.S. based Prime Alliance squad for the 2003 season, an opportunity that allowed him to maintain his role as a team leader and contribute to the development of younger riders.
