| Welcome to the site, and congratulations on your weight loss. I too started the tri life that way and I am hooked, and once you cross that finish line for the first time you will know what direction you want to go.
First things first, equipment is a good start, not much needed for the first time out, depending on location and distance of the race, you either need just some bike or tri shorts and goggles for the swim.
The bike portion can be easy with a borrowed bike if you don't have your own, just make sure it fits o.k. and you can adjust it to make the distance not seem like your riding to the end of the earth.
Last but not least the run portion, no problem here if you have shoes that will go the distance and not kill your feet and legs.
Any questions you have can be most likely be answered here, so fire away.
If you do get into the life, the gear is fun to get and upgrade as time and money permit.
Train hard and smart.
