New to site, just saying hi

Hello everyone, I just found this site and I am super stoked about competing in my first race. I really do not know to much about the sports, but am trying to learn. I played football and baseball in college and want a new challenge. I know that this is it. I just need to know what are some good bikes to buy and how to train for the swims. If you guys could help out with that it would be great. Thanks a lot and glad to be here!

Dallas,

Welcome to the tri! You'll find a lot of answers on this forum, and a lot of support as well.

The main thing about bikes depends on your budget. Trek puts out a great road bike that is moderately priced, and you can always add aerobars, etc to it to specialize for tri's. Go to a couple of bike stores and try some out. You'll also get a feel for the size you want (most triathletes ride on one size smaller than normal) and a feel for the pricetags. They can be pretty spendy, but you can find some great bikes at good prices too.

Swimming. Good question. Depending on your background, I would buy the book "Total Immersion," at least to start. I would also recommend "The Triathletes Training Bible." These will get you into the mindset of training for a tri. As for training for the swim, just start getting into the water and build up for now. Then, as you start to get the feel of it, start doing drills (Total Immersion), or maybe take a lesson and have a professional instructor help you with your stroke and technique.

Good luck and keep us posted with your progress!

Heather

Welcome

Once you get started it is an addiction. As far as bikes go, I recomend that for your first race or two ride what you've got, or can borrow. As long as it fits you allright.

As heather said, it all depends on flexibility. Most bikes in a entry level-intermediate level are relatively the same. I would look for the best deal possible. Components are the most important thing to look at. Frames will become more important as you gain experience, but to start make sure you get atleast Shimano 105 level componentry. Do not buy used, unless you have someone with you who knows what they are looking at. It could cost you.

go for a road bike. It has more flexibility if you decide that this tri thing is not for you. A road bike can be changed to a decent tri bike with little modification, but a tri bike cannot be easily changed to road.

once again, welcome, and if you have any other Q's feel free to ask!

Cheers
Syd
