Rep Power: | 1 tri down... hundreds to go (I'm hooked) I finished my first tri this weekend. (YEAH!!!) It was kick a$$. Thanks for some feedback for a couple questions I posted here. The tri was 800m/24mile/6mile. Lot's of fun except I dropped my sports bottle on mile 1 of the bike and didn't drink anything until mile 1 of the run. This really messed me up and I felt it during the run. My body felt heavy and slow.
Lesson learned: always take two bottles with me on the bike portion, even if I think I don't need it.
Next up: Half marathon this weekend and a sprint tri in November (in SF bay).

Rep Power: | Very Nice! Way to jump right into the Olympic distance. I'm new to cycling and didn't think I could manage carrying a water bottle and drinking while staying at speed, so I just used one of the small 50 ounce camelbacks with only about 20-25 ounces in it. I did have a little bit lengthy T1 time, but I don't think it had anything to do with the camelbak.

Rep Power: | How did you like the wind out there SC_tri, at least we got a tail wind back. great job this weekend. remember, Treasure Island is an open water swim so will be a tad cooler than the pool was yesterday.
heard there is an ultra-sprint on the 28th out here in SF area- look at results link in a day or too.
i know what you mean by hundreds to go....welcome to the club...addiction |

Rep Power: | The headwind going out was killer, and I haven't trained yet in those conditions. My average heading out was like 14mph and coming back like 23mph. I haven't heard about the ultra-sprint, just Treasure Island.
chappy, does the camel back add to much drag? I image it would thats why I didn't even try it. |

Rep Power: | The one I have isn't like the backpack type ones they have now. It is very flat. It didn't seem to add drag, but I'm about as unexperienced a cyclist as you will find.

Rep Power: | Guys, practice is the word for the day, take some time on your next ride to practice drinking and riding, it will only take a few sips and you will know how and when to do your drinking (smoking down hills is not the right place for a shot of Gatorade ;) ) and doing a pull up a monster hill's not one either but just about anywhere else is or can be.
Congrats on your completion Terry! now you know what a rush it is to cross the line and you brain swims back over the course and reminds you that it's great to be alive! Just remember to look around while you race so you can really enjoy the memories.
Keep up the good work.

Rep Power: | Aero bottles are good options. They're ready for you on your bike and you won't drop them! (I've dropped a water bottle or two myself :) ) I wouldn't consider a camel back, too bulky and it would take up too much time in the transition. Either have a back up bottle or get an aero bottle. BTW, an aero bottle only works with aerobars, so, if you don't have a bike with aerobars, it won't do you any good.

Rep Power: | I saw some of the aerobottles, and it looks like a great option. The camelbak does take a little bit of extra time in the transition. I'm partial to it, but I will probably give it up after a couple of races. The one I have is not bulky at all, though. It is a 50 ounce bladder and the pack only holds the bladder No big pockets just the bladder with a couple of straps. I've started trying to use a bottle during training rides, but it slows me down more than the pack at this point.

Rep Power: | In a sprint 50oz is overkill. I take in about 20 during the whole event. Race now, drink later :)

Rep Power: | I haven't heard of the aero bottles yet. Looks like a very good approach. I am going to check them out. Thanks for the feedback.

I only put 32 ounces in and drank out of it before the race as well. Our swim was in a glorified pond so I guess I could have just drank pond water and been good for the bike and run.:)
