Joining the Party

Hi everyone. I'm a newbie that's been lurking here for a couple months now. Figured that now that I've completed two tris, I'd say hi. Hi.

I think I can safely say I'm hooked. I had an absolute blast on both races, despite a horrendous swim on the first. That was a first-timers tri with a 1/4 mile swim, 12 mile bike and a 3 mile run. I finished in 1:14 and won my age group. My second was a 1/2 mile swim (and wasn't that a LOT longer than 1/4 mile?), 15 mile bike and 3 mile run. I finished that in 1:32.

I'm more of a runner than anything, but I've got a new bike and I'm planning on taking a Total Immersion class this fall. So, hopefully I can even things out a little.

Since I've been lurking, I've picked up all sorts of useful info, it's a great site. Anyway, thanks for all the info.

Gene

Welcome on Gene. Since you started so fast, it might be time to look on to Oly, 70.3 or maybe even Iron. Sounds like you have "Tri" blood" in you!

Be carefull what you say around the three of us though, we will have you "going long" in no time, speaking of going long, Heather and Scott are training for Iron, how's that going guys?
Later

Thanks for asking. I'm probably as ready as I'll get Spikey. I don't expect much this year due to the strain of added load at work, building an addition at home, giving time to my wife and kids and enjoying life in between training. Last year I averaged 8~ hours/week training June-Aug. This year I'm over 10 but that's still WAY short of what's needed to run a strong race. Fact is, I'll be happy with a 13.5-14 hour IM. That should put me 50% of the field. The Wall-2-Wall Sprint is at the end of this month and it's my benchmark race. I'll let you know after that :)

Speaking of "enjoying life", the Labor Day weekend is shaping up nicely. Tomorrow night we're having a "Bounty of the Sea" party. My best friend just caught several Wahoo and Mahi. Tuesday night I caught 31 lobsters (YES 31). A little coconut risotto, Caesar salad, Patron tequila, add friends and mix well. The recipe for a great party! Sunday’s century will suffer but hey, life’s too wonderful to worry about the small stuff!

Scott,
That sounds great. I run a large center console fishing boat down in the Florida Keys and spend alot of time on the water. Its amazing how much training I've been able to work into an already busy schedule. We're taking the boat down to the Bahamas for the long weekend, and I'm trying to figure out where I can stash my bike for the trip. I think I'll just run and swim while there.

Gene,
Nice to meet you.

Eddie

Going well, I think. I'm still 9 weeks out, so 6-7 full weeks with a 2-3 week taper. So, I've still got lot in front of me. But, as I've posted before, I'm starting to not be so apprehensive about distance. In fact, I'm embracing it almost. Its really fulfilling to know that I can put my body through that amount of training and still come out the other side with a smile. That's what this is all about!

Scott, I know a girl through another forum that's doing the Wall-2-Wall. She lives on one of the islands and is thinking about doing the HIM next May. Small world, eh? By the way, the dinner sounds great! What time should I be there?

Heather

What's the girl's name? Is she a Virgin Islander? Louise? If she lives on an island near me & is a Tri freak, likely we know each other or if she's cute at least that I'd know her ;) (Scott = Pig).

Watching the sun set from the deck at 6:00. Dinner promptly at 7. See you there.

Hopefully when you come down in May, I'll have had more time to dive. Until I started IM training, it was a rare occasion when my freezer had less than 100 lobster tails. Should be able to fix that by then :)
